Dufferin Arena began as an outdoor ice rink in Dufferin Park in 1967. The rink was enclosed in 1969 and over the years, additional renovations were made. Most recently, Dufferin Arena witnessed a full renovation in 2010, with a number of energy conservation systems installed. The most notable being a new refrigeration system, which transfers heat from the ice to the dressing room floors. The arena lighting system was also upgraded, using T-5 fixtures, requiring only 15 % of the energy the previous lighting system consumed.
New Solera glass panels adorn the arena front to back. These panels allow for natural daytime light to flow through the space, reducing and/or eliminating the need for overhead lighting. Dufferin also has a "green" roof, which provides natural insulation to the dressing rooms, while reducing the heat island effect of the building.
A new fire monitoring station and sprinkler system provides life safety equipment where there were none previously. In addition, waste heat from the refrigeration system is captured to heat domestic water, as well as melt the snow scraped from the ice, without the need to open an external door. This feature provides energy savings as the building need not have to mechanically remove moisture from the outside air. All areas of Dufferin are automatically vented, whether is be CO, Propane, Ammonia or CO2 in the public areas.
